Asantha Cooray
Our group has a new research opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow. We are hoping to fill this position by the end of this summer.

The postdoctoral fellow with work to analyze several infrared imaging datasets to measure fluctuations in the unresolved background, clustering of IR galaxies, and to conduct simulation studies for a joint project between JPL, UCSD, and UCI to measure the IR background light between 1 to 2 microns using rocket-borne IR images (Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment; CIBER). CIBER sounding rockets will be launched from NASA facilities at White Sands, NM at six month intervals beginning Spring of 2008. The goal of this experiment is to understand the extragalactic background light at these wavelengths and to measure the power spectrum of IR light in the same manner CMB anisotropy power spectrum is measured.

As planning work for this project, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to analyze and measure anisotropies and clustering of IR light in NICMOS, Spitzer GOODS, and Spitzer COSMOS fields in participation with members of these observational teams. Our work on this topic is discussed in several recent papers.

These projects require a prior experience in programming and analysis of IR datasets from HST/Spitzer and other ground and space-based observatories. Most of prior work is based on IDL and the postdoctoral fellow can work with the existing team members to develop necessary tools. A background in cosmology is also necessary for this work.

The position is initially for 2 years with a third year renewal subject to progress and availability of funds. If interested, please contact Asantha Cooray acooray@uci.edu . The application process is on going and will require details of previous research, publication list, and 3 letters of references. The position is ideal for a recent PhD as a first or a second postdoctoral position.
